James Martin Blinds Venetian Blinds 8

Venetian blinds offer you control over both lighting and privacy, with the added bonus of looking stylish and elegant in any room in the home. However, as with any window dressing, there is a certain amount of regular cleaning that you need to engage in to keep them looking their best.

This month, at James Martin Blinds, we’ll take you through the steps for how to clean Venetian blinds – including what equipment you’ll need for the job.

Venetian blind materials

Firstly, a quick note about the type of material your blind is made from. If you have wooden Venetian blinds, you will want to avoid using moisture as this could lead to warping. You should dust these blinds regularly, and only use a lightly dampened cloth if absolutely necessary. Avoid removing wooden blinds or metal blinds and dunking them in the bath – this is just one example of the poor advice being given out on the internet.

The following advice in this piece is suitable for metal or synthetic Venetian blinds, but as with anything, we recommend you seek advice from the selling or manufacturer of your blinds to avoid damage if you’re unsure when it comes to cleaning products.

What you’ll need to clean Venetian blinds:

  • A microfibre cloth
  • Paper towels
  • Feather duster
  • Cleaning solution (appropriate for the material)
  • Vacuum cleaner

How to clean your Venetian blinds

All blinds are slightly different, but here’s our step-by-step guide for how to clean Venetian blinds:

Step 1 – To begin with, you should lower your blinds all the way down so that you have access to all the individual slats. This way you won’t miss any marks or sticky patches hiding behind other slats.

Step 2 – Most blinds become dusty over time, it’s only natural, so begin by removing the dust. You can do this a number of ways, either with the microfibre cloth or with the feather duster. Alternatively, you could use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum, but be sure not to use too much pressure or you could bend your blind slats, causing visible damage.

Step 3 – Once you’ve cleared the dust from one side, use the want to rotate the slats so that you can access the reverse and follow the same process as the last step.

Step 4 – What you should be left with is dust-free blinds. If there are any more stubborn marks, spillages or splashes on the blinds, these will now be noticeable and you can systematically go about removing them. For this, use a dampened cloth – you can use a little cleaning product if you need something stronger, but only use products approved for the material your blinds are made of.

Step 5 – If you’ve used any water or cleaning product, use some paper towels to dry each slat individually. This ensures you’ve thoroughly dried your blinds – if left wet, they may attract dust quickly or become a hotbed for mould.
